St. Joseph to begin construction on Athletic Facility
SHAWNEE, KS - Nov. 3, 2025
St. Joseph Catholic Church will begin renovations on its former football stadium this month, marking the first milestone of the church's Generations Growing Together capital campaign to renovate its early Education Center (EEC) and Mirocke Stadium.
When completed in summer 2026, the St. Joseph Athletic Facility will host youth football (tackle and flag), soccer, track practices and other events. St. Joseph is partnering with Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) for boys and girls football programs, and with Special Olympics Kansas for soccer, track and field and other sports. Other community organizations will also utilize the multi-purpose field and stadium, which will be open nearly year-round.
One-of-a-Kind Youth Athletic Facility
This is the only facility of its kind in the regional Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas specifically designed for multiple youth sports in a single stadium, with the capability to host leagues, teams and special spectator events throughout the week and under the lights. The facility is located in north central Johnson County, KS, within walking distance of downtown Shawnee, KS.

The stadium was built in the 1950s for the former St. Joseph High School, which later became Aquinas High School, now in Overland Park. The stadium has been used since the 1980s for CYO football and track, and in recent years, the field has deteriorated.
Renovations include a new synthetic turf field, new 3-lane meter-length track with jumping pits, new video scoreboard, lights and sound system.
